A bit over a year ago, I posted the picture on the left as I blogged about my “Recent kiln disaster” while trying to make a pair of backsplash tiles. In that post, I had mentioned that there was no way to save the piece with the splits in it. Terry and I have collaborated on a few pieces of work recently, and he decided to try re-working this piece into something new.
Terry recently has been doing quite a few pieces where he “stitches” together pieces of glass to make a larger piece to use in a slumped bowl form. He tried re-working this tile by “stitching” it together with clear glass pieces that would hold it together through the slump firing. Because of the weight of the 3 layers of glass, it took several tries to make the stitches work, one of which cost him 6 real stitches in urgent care as it broke while he was cleaning the piece after a firing.
The end result of Terry re-working the piece turned out pretty interesting, as you can see from the picture on the right. If you click on the image, you can see the large glass “stitches” or “band-aids” he used to hold the piece together on the left and right sides of the bowl across the splits. You can also see how the glass has morphed quite a bit from the original tile above to the final result shown here. The split in the lower right wound up continuing to pull apart to make a separate triangular section on the right side of the piece. I’m not sure it was worth the pain of his trip to urgent care, but I can hardly argue with the way the piece came together in the end.
