Pattern in glass can be created in many ways. The three most common forms are: 1) The sheet glass can be cut into small shapes cut from two or more colors of glass that can be physically arranged into interesting color-based patterns. 2) The sheet of glass itself can have a pattern applied through iridescent or dichroic coatings. 3) Pattern can be applied dimensionally to the glass – this process is called kiln carving by Bullseye – through a pattern mold or layers of fiber paper. In the piece of art glass shown here, I was playing with the second two methods – iridescent patterns and dimensional patterns with a mold.
I chose this black iridescent glass from Bullseye for this experimental fused glass piece mostly because the black iridescent glass tends to show dimensional patterning better than clear iridescent glass does. I also wanted to experiment with how much patterning will cause an art piece to appear to busy or cluttered. I think that this piece is fairly successful in pushing that boundary while not quite stepping over the line.
The iridescent coating on the black glass is a rainbow houndstooth pattern on a gold iridescent background. The gold background gives the eye a place to rest, especially around the rim of the dish, while the dimensional spirals add another layer of texture to the dish. It’s always fun when an experiment turns out to be a success the first time out.
Going forward, I’m planning to do even more work in patterns and textures going forward to see where I can and can’t push the envelope. There are so many options to playing with both iridescent patterns and dimensional texture, I could experiment for quite a while and not repeat myself. Stay tuned to this blog for the results of these experiments!
