This morning, I taught my first fused glass class. The theme of the day was pendants, although not all of the students chose to make pendants after all. These two images are taken of my student’s work before firing. The image here on the left shows a jewelry set, consisting of a matching pair of earrings and a pendant. The image below on the right shows a sun-catcher that will eventually be hung in a window. Honestly, it was hard to choose only two pieces, since they all look really good!
I really enjoy teaching, mostly because I enjoy the creativity inherent in watching how each student approaches their respective project. Some students want to go for broke, trying everything, just to see what will happen. Others are a little overwhelmed or timid with a new medium, not knowing in advance how things will turn out, and worried that it should turn out well the first time. My favorite students are usually the ones in the middle ground, the ones that have an idea and just need some guidance to figure out how to get close to creating what they can already see in their mind’s eye.
My students for today’s fused glass class came from a Meetup Group that I’m a member of, called the Verde Valley Girlfriends. We get together on a regular basis to explore the area, have a good chat over a meal – often trying new restaurants that we may not have tried otherwise, or doing something fun that we all have an interest in. The group knew that I was a fused glass artist and several of the members asked me to propose a Meetup to make something. So, I did.
I had some glass left over from when I started working in fused glass years ago that I don’t use anymore, so hosting the class wouldn’t really cost me anything in materials and I really do enjoy teaching. I found it an excellent incentive to push me in the direction of teaching a fused glass class once in a while. The Girlfriends had a fun time playing around with glass, I had a great time hosting. I’ll be asking everyone if I can post their work after it comes out of the kiln, so that you can enjoy the fruits of their explorations.
