CustomMade was started in 2009, and although it’s definitely new to me, it has a great track record of matching Makers with Buyers. As of this writing, they have over 12,000 Makers and over 100,000 Buyers collaborating on projects. It has also received a lot of positive press in some big name media outlets about some of its many great success stories. Their basic premise is to change the way people acquire goods. From their website:
We want to fundamentally change the way people think about buying things. To put it simply, we believe that everyone should try custom, and we think that buying custom from local Makers is a viable alternative to buying from big box retailers. For that reason, we’re creating a platform that allows you to engage in a whole new way as a consumer.
Makers post projects that they are willing to do in their CustomMade portfolio and people place orders for a custom made piece created especially for them to their specifications. Another way to use the site is that Buyers can post a job that they want done and Makers can express interest in creating that project for the Buyer, letting the Buyer know how long it would take and how much it would cost for them to complete the project. The Buyer then chooses a Maker whose expression of interest best matches up with their vision of what they want made and the two negotiate the price. Either way, the Buyer gets to specify exactly what they want and the Buyer and Maker work together as needed to create that item(s) for the agreed-upon price.
I was just juried in to participate on CustomMade as a Maker! This site seems perfect for reaching people who would be interested in my Intention Plates, as well as ordering glass art of other types from me, like Tie Dye Bowls or Heart Bowls in a specific color choice. I’ve just started to build out my portfolio, and have just posted my fused glass desk accessories as another possible project I could make. It will take about 24 hours before it’s approved and goes live as something you can order from me there. In the meantime, you can take a look at other projects that I could make for you.
By the way, since I’m just waiting on my court date (should be around the first of March, according to the court clerk who helped me file the paperwork) to change my name officially, I’ve used my new name in my portfolio. So, when you see Pilisa Rainbow Lady on the CustomMade portfolio, that is indeed me. The “new” me.
