It’s been a crazy few weeks, trying to get several pieces completed in between traveling and meetings. The first successful large frit ball bowl, entitled Sedona Sunset, just came out of the kiln this morning. I really like the end result and hope all of you do as well. (You can click on the images above to enlarge them.)
This bowl is an abstract frit painting of a Sedona sunset over the red rocks. My thought process on this was to show the ridge near my house that’s covered in junipers and cedars, represented by the evergreen mix near the bottom of the bowl. Above that is a red rock ridge with the sun setting just above it. The bands of blue above the red rock ridge are the sky deepening into night. The photo to the right was my inspiration for the bowl, even though this photo isn’t a sunset shot. I combined this shot with a bunch of sunset shots I had taken at different times around town and created this bowl from a composite of all of them.
Surprisingly, I actually like the back of this piece just as much as the front. The image at the top right is the back of the piece. I had taken the time to flip all of the bottom layer of frit balls over so that each of the frit balls was laying with the shelf side down in order to get a smooth back on the bowl. The effect I created by doing that was even better than I had hoped for.
