As a participant in the 2015 SVAC Open Studio event this past weekend, I was photographed and interviewed by the Sedona Red Rock News, our local newspaper. As it turns out, I was front page news! I was photographed doing a torch-working demonstration, making colored “twistees” for some future pieces.
The event went extremely well, with well over 100 guests over the three days – the guest register has 111 people listed, but there were quite a few people who didn’t sign in that I forgot to count in the margin. I made five sales, which was a lovely bonus, while getting the artwork exposed to a wider network of people. A guest who came down from Flagstaff insisted that AMusinGlass should apply for their “It’s Elemental” Fine Craft Exhibition at the Coconino Center for the Arts coming up in the fall, which was also wonderful feedback about our work.
So, between chatting about the art with all of our guests, doing torch demonstrations, selling some glass, and making front page news, I have to say that it was an incredibly fun and rewarding experience. We’ll definitely be participating again next year, and it will be even better not having to give up my garage for the weekend to do it! The movers are going to be packing and moving all of the studio stuff on Monday and Tuesday, and we’ll be busy unpacking and arranging – and probably re-arranging several times after that – for the weeks to come.
It’s going to be wonderful to have separate working areas for each of us, a dedicated space for cutting glass, room to grow and add new equipment or processes, and having our cold-working equipment inside the studio so we aren’t freezing in the winter or sweltering in the summer. As a bonus, we should have plenty of space for teaching classes in fused glass. We’ll also be creating a gallery area in the area as you come in the front door, which will allow us to have glass on display for sale. We’re both looking forward to it! 🙂
